The 5th Vancouver Chinese Film Festival opened on July 15, 2017 at the Vancouver International Film Festival Centre. Hon. Harjit S.Sajjan, Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Canada, John Horgan, Premier-elect of British Columbia, and Richard Stewart, Mayor of Coquitlam, sent congratulatory letters to express congratulations.
Ms. Liu Fei, Consul General of the Consulate of the People's Republic of China in Vancouver, Ms. Hu Xiao, Cultural Consul, BC MLA Janet Routledge, BC MLA David Eby, BC MLA Shane Simpson, BC MLA Katrina Chen, BC MLA Anne Kang, Mr. Niu Hua, Executive Chairman of the Canadian Chinese Federation, Ms. Huang Ping, the producer of the opening film "Good Morning, Dad", Yuan Yaxuan, the director of the shortlisted film "Red Cut Flowers", Chen Qingyu of "Face-Changing Life" and "Parrots", also attended the festival event.
In total, more than 40 important guests attended the opening ceremony, including Liu Chao, producer of Lingzhi Poaching Sanctuary, Ms. Meng Ni, the original singer of the theme song of "Parents", Professor Kong Chaopeng, Dean of the School of Communication, Jilin University, and Professor Dai Yuanguang, Dean of the Shanghai Documentary Academy.
The 5th Vancouver Chinese Film Festival received more than 300 films from all sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Israel, Czechoslovakia, the United States, Canada and other countries. Among them, 54 films were shortlisted. Among them, 70% of the shortlisted films are works by young directors.
These films not only displayed the Chinese-style warmth from the perspective of young directors, they also conveyed the creative vitality of young Chinese filmmakers to the world.
